This year marks the 40th anniversary of the purchase of the Center’s land. It was part of an initiative to keep flood-prone land undeveloped, and therefore protect property from damage.

And this year, you can surely see why that was a good idea. The Nature Center came along five years later, and we’ve been going strong ever since. (That picture is of a whole lot of debris left behind by this year’s… fun spring. This is what we get as the water, which was prolific this year, recedes.

The Gazette did a nice article on the anniversary, which you can read here.

(As an aside: the fact that the flood waters have mostly receded means that all of you who were kept off the Sac and Fox trail these last few weeks can head back out! Wear shoes that can get muddy, because we have a wealth of it!)

skunk cabbage

We’ve had our first skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus foetidus) sightings here at the Center, which is fantastic, because this Sunday, we have a naturalist led hike up the Bena Brook to look for more!

For more information, visit the website, and click “calendar”. For more information online about skunk cabbage, visit wikipedia.

(The photo on this post has been borrowed from this website. Hopefully after this weekend’s hike, we’ll have some pictures of our own to show you!)

Local news KCRG did a lovely spot on the Maple Syrup Festival. Check it out by clicking here!

MSF Eve

We had volunteers last Friday help shovel the Nature Center out of the snow in preparation for the Maple Syrup Festival that occured over the weekend. What did YOU do to prepare on Syrup Fest Eve?
